Hi, good morming, nice to meet you, please let`me introduce myself. I`m Karla Herrera I`m from Mexico, city and I studied Trade Relations at ESCA Santo Tomas.

Let me talk about my major, it is based on making products and offering them to the customers , also it include activities like adversiting media, sales promotion and Public Relations. It`s a great major and everything about it I liked.

My job consists in doing Public Relations I mean creating news about a company or product brand. This consists in making a good image about my product and this way selling the image and entering it in the mind of my client.

I work for Merck company, Merck is a lab, we manufacture and trade pharmaceutical products and pigments. We have more than 30000 amployees around the world. For us it is essential to have first class people, our human resources strategy is based in attracting, retaining and developing talented staff. The headquarters is in Darmastadt, Germany.

Merck started in 1827, it`s founder was Heinrich Emmenuel Merck, it began with industrial production of alkaloids, plant extraxts and other chemicals. Merck-Mexico was born in 1930, as one of the first pharmaceutical producers in our country. Merck is present in countries like Mexico, France, Spain, USA, Japan, England.

Merck includes an extensive range of products, for example Primary Care, this unit includes antibiotics, analgesics and antidiarrheal, all of them with a nice presentation. Also Sedalmerck effective relief against headache and fever. Deflox, against throat infections, Floratil, helps to fight the upset stomach, Diabion, balanced formula of vitamins and minerals designed for diabetic patients and Doloneurobion helps pains disappear more strong to the body.

The graph shows the company sales from 1980 to 2008. As you can see it has increased from 5 millions dollars in 1980 to 100 m. in 2000, but the sales fell to a low in 2001, as you can see the sales increased from 75 millions in 2002 to 165m. in 2006, more recently the sales have remained steady.

Merck hopes that it will be the first lab to find the cure against cancer. We think the price of research could be around 30 millions dollars. However Merck is happy bacause it will see a big discovery in the medicine and the cure for this sickness.

SUBJECT: Bonus or bust? The best option

We have a seriuos problem: productivity has fallen significantly in the last two years,and the business has started to suffers. The workers are failing to mett their production targets and the company is often late with to customers. Theran also complaints about poor quality. The workers are unhappy because they are never able to earn their productivity bonuses. Morale is low. Also to the situation has know reached a crisis: the company`s reputation is badly damaged, sales are falling and financial losses amount to thousands of euros aech month.

What should do?

We have four options:

1. Give a pay increase toall the workers, this would cost 500000 euros

2. Reduce the level at which worker can earn a productivity bonus (this would cost 300000 euros)

3.Appoint a new produccion manager

4. Cut labor costs (e.g by noy recruiting any new workers when people leave)

What choose option?

Well my team and me decided the option two, Why? Well is a Strategy because is cheaper than pay increase,the cost will be to 300000 euros, and the workes would recived bonus if we`ll decide the option one, is a high cost and our capital is decrease, we talking about 50000 euros is to high.

On the other hand if we appoint a new production manager, is a bad idea because he is not a strong manager and is not popular with the workers. Therefore the option two is our decision

to improve the productivity an resolve the problems of company`s.

WEEK 1 March 3- March 7

All this week we had a parcial exams.


WEEK 2 March 10- 14

We started the unit 12 about getting a better service I learned a new vocabulary and talked about grammar, saw the present tense and the way that we can use also to the conditional instructions, we did many execises in the book and with that I can improve my english.

We did like 3 or 4 listening about dealing with problems. I think this is important because of this way we practice more and learn. Was a week easy becuase the theme about unit 12 it was easy. Worked on the book, did exercises, I could practice my english. Was a cool week for me.

WEEK 3 March 24- March 28

This week we did a speaking exam and the reading exam. Also to we talk about adjetives, adverbs and noun. Work on the book about how increasing productivity, did exercises and practice I improved my english because I lerned many and new words I think this theme was very interesting. Also to talk about revolution in the car industry I think it`s great that our teacher is from abroad,because I can improved my English. She`s a good teacher

WEEK 4 March 31- April 04

This week we saw and praticed about adjectives and adverbs the diferences beteween they and how and when use, work on the book did exercises. I think that the most important that week was that talked and did a speking in groups about managing time about Dilemma and Decision. Of this way we practice and learn

WEEK 5 April 07- April 11

This week we starded the unit 14 about creativity, work on the book, did exercices and practice, read a article about diferent perspective, talking about Multi-part verbs like Look at, Look for, Look after, Look like and Look forward to, also to see the suffixes like Practice-Practical. This theme like me and I learned many and new things. Saw where and when use the conditional like Would, could, also to see about finding creative solutions. Did a listenig speaking. And that`s all. Because the friday starded the partial examen.

WEEK 5 February 25- February 29

This week was small because we started the parcial exams. We started the unit 11 about active voise and passive voise the diference between these, how change a phrased of active voise to passive voise and how use the verbs in present perfect, worked and practiced on the book. I think this is a great form to learn, did exercise, and the most importat is that I learned a larger vocabulary this way I can improve my english We did the speaking, reading and listening exams . I learned many things and reaffirmed my kmowledge. Another think is, we have a native teacher and is a advantage because we can learn a little more about english, honestly is a great teacher because she`s patient with us, and is different to the others teachers. The way form to work on the Blog I like because is differente, innovative and drove us to stimulate the english. I hope to the next partial be like this.

WEEK 4 February18- February 22

We started the unit 11. We talked about describing a graph for example changes in price, sales of other data, also to saw synonyms like raise-rise- rocket and fall-lower push down, did a small listening about pricing strategy. We did a speaking exam about describing a graph with a partner and in my opinion the most important theme in this unit was the present perfect because is a important part of english if I don`t know the verbs I fried. Also to we saw the verbs in their three ways, present, past simple and present perfect, we did a examen like reading and worked on the book, did exercises, I could practice my english. Was a hard week for me.

WEEK 3 February 11- February 15

This week was a little small becuase, we had class only three days, we worked in the book, do exercices I learned new words, a new vocabulary and tha`s good because of this way I can improve my level english and obviouslly my pronunciation. Also to we did a speaking about make suggestions and that`s all. Was a small week.

WEEK 2 February 05- February 08

We started the unit 9, we talked about modals of obligation, I learned how and when use SHOULD, SHOULD`NT ,MUST, MUSTN`T, HAVE TO, NEED TO, also to we saw about Marketing, we worked in the book, did exercises about this theme. I learned new words, new vocabulary and I improve my pronunciation. This themes are very important in my major, also to we talked about making suggestions, methods of selling, this is very important for me, because I study Trade Relations,I have to know how sell my product, we work on the book. I think that was a good week I learned many things.

WEEK 1 January 28- February 01

In the first week of class, We met our English teacher.
we can`t work on the book almost, because was the first week in the semester so we can`t work, the teacher introduced herself and we know more about her. I think it`s great that our teacher is from abroad,because I can improved my English. She`s a good teacher.

ME: We need to decide how to increase sales this month. Any ideas?
ZURI: What about offering some discounts?
IVONNE: That’s a good idea but our prices are already cheaper than our competitors.
ZURI: So why not send some advertising to customers? We could tell them about our prices.
ZURI: I like that. I think we also need to use Internet and email more.
IVONNE: What do you mean?
ZURI: Well, perhaps we could email some of our old customers and update the website?
IVONNE: That’s true. Our website is the same as it was six months ago.
ME: OK. I’ll deal with that.
IVONNE: What about inviting someone from the local newspaper to visit the factory and show them our new range?
ME: Brilliant! But I think we should invite all the newspapers.
IVONNE: I’m not sure about that. Do you think they would come?
ZURI: We could at least try and see what happens.
